Why do we have to celebrate World Car Free Day?
By reducing the number of cars on the road, World Car Free Day helps decrease the risk of traffic accidents. With fewer vehicles, roads become safer for pedestrians and cyclists, encouraging more people to choose active modes of transportation.
Around the globe, this day brings the numerous benefits of going car-free to citizens including reduced air pollution and the promotion of walking and cycling in a safer environment.
The first national campaign to support Car-Free Days was inaugurated in Britain by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) in 1997 but the celebration of the World Car-Free Day began in 2000.
Lamu, a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site and an exceptionally fascinating island off the coast of Kenya. It is East Africa's oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement where the usual mode of transport is donkeys and bicycles or people just prefer walking. The city is completely car-free.
